Welcome

Heels & Hearts is a student organization at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill which has been founded for the purpose of providing support to children with diabetes and their families in the greater Chapel Hill community. Our objectives are to support diabetic youth and their families, not provide medical instruction.

We can give first-hand experience, explain common knowledge, and act as a listening ear to the frustrations, concerns, and uncertainties of the parents and children who contact us. We will also refer them to various organizations and persons for specific medical inquiries.

Individuals of Heels & Hearts do not meet or contact patients and their families; we only provide our information and allow them to contact us via telephone (through a doctor’s list) or e-mail (through this website or a doctor’s list.)

All mentors attend a mandatory training session, reviewing the procedure for contact and appropriate response to questions, concerns, and situations that may arise prior to addition to the contact list. All group members are current or former UNC-Chapel Hill students, faculty, or staff.

Dr. Margaret Vimmerstedt of UNC-Chapel Hill Campus Health Services (CHS), acts as a mentor to Heels & Hearts group and oversees training and feedback sessions to foster the overall success of the group and its members.  One provider from Counseling and Wellness Services (CWS) in CHS, also oversees training and feedback sessions.
